As a result of increasing digitization, companies and citizens alike are dependent on stable network coverage. Locations with poor mobile network coverage, known as dead spots, are a major nuisance for those affected. Germany is still a long way from complete nationwide coverage. In rural areas in particular, there is often a lack of stable mobile communications connections and fast Internet. It can be dangerous if emergency services, police and fire departments cannot be reached. The German government is keen to close wireless gaps.
Without further measures, there will be no prospect of good mobile communications coverage with fast Internet for some households and remote regions.
To capture the situation as it actually is for mobile phone users, garbage collection is helping in some places. Garbage trucks are equipped with special technology. They are fitted with small boxes that continuously dial into the mobile communications networks while they are on the move and measure reception quality.
