3G – Third Generation

« Back to Glossary Index

Simply explained:
3G brought faster internet to mobile phones. It made it possible to surf the internet, send emails and make video calls. It was significantly faster than 2G, but slower than modern standards.

Advanced explanation:
3G, also known as UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System), was introduced in the early 2000s and brought significant advances in mobile data transmission. It utilised WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) technology and enabled data transfer rates of up to 42 Mbps with HSPA+ (High Speed Packet Access). 3G enabled mobile internet services such as web browsing, video conferencing, mobile TV and downloading multimedia content. It was the first mobile phone standard to offer a sufficiently high speed to support data-intensive applications such as streaming videos.
