Installation of smart metering systems: a six-step plan for success with our LTE network tester!

The scheduled functioning of smart metering systems depends, to a large extent, on the mobile connectivity. One of the biggest challenges when it comes to installing smart metering system is ensuring this. For this reason, it makes sense to carry out a mobile measurement at the installation site, before installing the measuring unit. In this article, we will explain how to use the ENQT network testers and how to perform a succesful iMSys installation in six simple steps.

The Metering Point Operation Act intends to replace all analogue electricity meters with modern measuring equipment or smart metering systems (iMSys) by 2032. IMSys are digital electricity meters, which are connected via mobile communications, within the Internet of Things, to the central offices of the metering point operators and to the other devices in the power grid. They can transmit and receive data, and automatically send the status of the electricity meter to the operator. Thus, manual reading is no longer necessary. This represents an enormous relief, for both service providers and customers. Consumers can also track their own energy consumptions, almost in real-time and visualize historical data. In addition, the roll-out of smart metering systems is also expected to propel the energy revolution and guarantee cost reductions for consumers.

However, all of these benefits depend on a good mobile connection to the electricity meter. One of the biggest challenges when it comes to installing smart metering system is ensuring this. For this reason, it makes sense to carry out a mobile measurement at the installation site, before installing the measuring unit. Step 1: Remove old meter

Before the installation of the smart metering system can begin, the old analog meter must first be dismantled.

Step 2: Meter test

In the second step, the LTE network tester is used for the first time, as part of the preparation process for the iMSys installation: with the help of the meter test, the available mobile networks at the installation site can be determined.

Step 3: Installing the new meter and iMSys

After the successful verification of the mobile reception, the new meter and the smart measuring system can be installed.

Step 4: Signal test

In the live measuring mode, the network tester can now be used to test the signal within the desired network, in close proximity to the iMSys. This allows the selection of the ideal position for the antenna.

Step 5: Antenna montage

In the next step, the antenna can be mounted in the previously-determined position. To ensure a reliable connection, we advise validating the reception of the mobile radio signal by the antenna once again. The LTE network tester can be used to this purpose as well.

Step 6: Complete and document the installation

After the successful conclusion of the installation, the measurement data collected with the LTE network tester can be exported and simply integrated into the documentation of the operation.
