Base station

« Back to Glossary Index

Simply explained: Base stations are the central nodes in a mobile network that enable wireless communication between end devices and the core network. They send and receive signals to and from cell phones or other devices.

Fortgeschritten erklärt:
A base station is a central element in a mobile network and establishes the radio connection between the mobile devices and the core network.
It usually consists of a radio module (transceiver), one or more antennas and a controller to manage the radio resources.
Depending on the mobile communications standard, it is also referred to as a BTS (base transceiver station) in the GSM network, eNodeB in LTE or gNodeB in 5G.
Base stations transmit and receive radio signals, control cell areas and thus enable voice calls, text messages and mobile data connections.
Their range depends on factors such as transmission power, antenna alignment and environment and can range from a few hundred meters in cities to several kilometers in rural areas.
