10 good reasons for mobile metering when installing smart metering systems

The rollout of smart metering systems is currently in full swing in Germany. The Metering Point Operation Act, which came into force in 2016, stipulates that all analog electricity meters are to be replaced by modern metering equipment or intelligent metering systems (iMSys) by 2032. Metering point operators are responsible for this conversion to "smart metering" and the installation of the new meters.

Intelligent metering systems are one of the core components of the so-called “smart grids” and are intended to make a significant contribution to the energy turnaround. Both modern metering units and smart metering systems are digital electricity meters. The difference lies in a communication unit, with the help of which iMSys can receive and send data via mobile communications. Modern metering devices can be upgraded to a smart metering system at a later date by installing such a communication unit.

Smart metering systems automatically collect meter readings, which can also be called up by customers at quarter-hourly intervals. Historical data is also stored and can be viewed in a daily, weekly, monthly or annual display. The communication unit also ensures automatic transmission of the collected data to the metering point operator. Such remote reading eliminates the need for regular on-site visits by the service provider.

To ensure that a smart metering system functions as planned, a good mobile communications link is therefore essential. Service providers responsible for carrying out the rollout report that this connection is the biggest challenge when installing iMSys. Around 80% of the faults that occur here can be traced back to poor mobile communications reception. For this reason, it makes sense to carry out a mobile radio measurement at the installation site before installing the measuring unit. For this purpose, we offer network testers that are suitable for measuring GMS/GPRS, UMTS and LTE reception. Our devices score among other things with their easy operation, automatic updates and optional remote maintenance, access to our measurement data portal, and central device management. The ENQT network testers LTE provide reliable measurement data and offer you the following advantages when installing smart metering systems:

1. Flexibility: Test mobile networks before you start the installation. This prevents installations from having to be aborted.

2. Antenna positioning: Find best position for your antenna. Optimal antenna positioning can significantly improve reception.

3. Antenna selection: Select the best antenna for each installation. With the right antenna, over 98% of installations can be completed successfully.

4. Installation success: Provide your installers with an easy way to measure success. Validate your own and others’ installations with a quick review.

5. Problem cases: Identify problem cases easily during installation, saving second visits and significant costs.

6. Documentation: Document your measured values for later evaluation and as a basis for rollout planning.

7. Analyses: Analyze problem cases in the mobile network connection quickly and easily. This makes even complex installations a success.

8. Network operator selection: Select any network operator and the respective network technology. Our devices measure preference-free and provider-independent.

9. Long-term monitoring: Monitor critical installations extensively to find even the most complex faults.

10. Complete analysis: Measure latencies and data throughput with our network testers as well! This is an invaluable advantage especially for extensive installations and complex systems.
